Low ovarian reserve can be hard to hear, especially if you’re trying to grow your family. It often brings questions about egg supply, fertility, and what you can do next. While acupuncture can’t create new eggs or reverse aging, it may help support your reproductive health and improve the environment around the eggs you have.

If you’ve recently received this diagnosis, it’s normal to have questions about what comes next. Book a free consultation with our clinic to talk about your fertility goals, contact us if you’d like to learn more about acupuncture, or read our reviews to see how we’ve supported others on their fertility journey.

What Is Diminished Ovarian Reserve?

Diminished ovarian reserve means there are fewer eggs left in the ovaries than expected for your age. Every woman is born with all the eggs she’ll ever have. As the years pass, that number naturally goes down.

For some women, this happens earlier than expected. It can occur for many reasons, including:

  • Age
  • Family history
  • Endometriosis
  • Surgery on the ovaries
  • Some medical treatments, such as chemotherapy
  • Sometimes there isn’t a clear cause

Having low ovarian reserve doesn’t mean you can’t become pregnant. It simply means there may be fewer eggs available each month, and fertility treatment may become more time-sensitive.

What Is AMH and Why Does It Matter?

AMH stands for anti-Müllerian hormone. This hormone is made by small follicles in the ovaries. Because of this, an AMH blood test gives doctors an idea of your remaining egg supply.

A low AMH level may suggest low ovarian reserve. However, it’s only one piece of the puzzle.

Your fertility doctor will often look at several factors together, including:

  • Your age
  • Antral follicle count (AFC) seen on an ultrasound
  • Other hormone levels
  • Your menstrual cycle
  • Your overall health

It’s important to remember that AMH doesn’t measure egg quality. It also can’t predict whether you’ll become pregnant on your own. Instead, it helps your care team understand how your ovaries may respond to fertility treatment.

Can Acupuncture Improve Low AMH or Ovarian Reserve?

Many women ask if acupuncture can raise AMH or increase ovarian reserve. Right now, there’s no strong evidence that acupuncture can create new eggs or restore the number of eggs in the ovaries.

Instead, acupuncture may support the body’s normal reproductive function in other ways. It may help improve blood flow to the ovaries and uterus. Better circulation may help deliver oxygen and nutrients to reproductive tissues. Acupuncture may also help support healthy hormone signaling and reduce stress, which can affect overall reproductive health.

For women going through fertility treatment, acupuncture is often used as part of a complete care plan rather than as a replacement for medical treatment.

What the Research Says

Research on acupuncture for low ovarian reserve is growing. Some studies have reported improvements in hormone levels, antral follicle count, ovarian response during fertility treatment, and pregnancy outcomes.

At the same time, not every study has found the same results. Researchers also point out that many studies have been small or used different treatment plans. Because of this, more high-quality research is still needed.

Acupuncture and Letrozole

Another recent review looked at women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), now also referred to by many healthcare professionals as polyfollicular metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS). Women who received acupuncture along with letrozole had higher ovulation and pregnancy rates than those who used letrozole alone.

However, this research was done in women with PCOS/PMOS, not women with low ovarian reserve, so the findings can’t be directly applied. More high-quality studies are still needed.

How Acupuncture May Support Egg Quality and Ovarian Function

Egg quality naturally changes with age, and no treatment has been proven to reverse that process. Still, acupuncture may help create a healthier environment for the remaining eggs.

Possible ways acupuncture may support fertility include:

Many women also find that regular acupuncture helps them feel calmer during what can be an emotional time.

What to Expect During Treatment

Your first visit begins with a detailed health history. We’ll talk about your menstrual cycle, fertility goals, medical history, test results, and any treatments you’re currently receiving. Each treatment plan is tailored to your needs. Sessions usually last about 45 to 60 minutes.

Very thin, sterile needles are placed at specific points on the body. Most people feel little or no pain during treatment. Many even relax enough to fall asleep. If you’re preparing for IVF or another fertility treatment, acupuncture is often scheduled around your treatment cycle to provide ongoing support.

Lifestyle Habits That Support Ovarian Health Alongside Acupuncture

Acupuncture works best as part of a complete fertility plan.

Healthy habits that may support reproductive health include:

  • Eating a balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, and protein
  • Getting regular sleep
  • Staying active with gentle exercise
  • Managing stress in healthy ways
  • Avoiding smoking
  • Limiting alcohol if recommended by your healthcare provider
  • Taking supplements only if advised by your doctor or fertility specialist

Small changes over time can support your overall health while you’re trying to conceive.

Is Acupuncture Right for You?

Every fertility journey is different. If you have low ovarian reserve, acupuncture may be a helpful part of your care plan alongside your fertility doctor. While it can’t increase the number of eggs you have, it may support your reproductive health, help you feel more relaxed, and complement medical fertility treatments.

The best approach depends on your age, test results, fertility goals, and overall health. Working with both your fertility specialist and a licensed acupuncturist can help you choose a plan that fits your needs.
