Now, let’s jump into what you came here for!

The Dos After Acupuncture

  • Stay Hydrated: One of the simplest yet most important things you can do after an acupuncture session is to drink plenty of water. Hydration helps to flush out toxins released during treatment and supports the body’s natural healing processes. And let’s be honest? Most of us do NOT drink enough water, despite knowing that it gives our bodies the fuel that it needs to recover and rejuvenate!
  • Rest and Relax:  While we know some of our clients visit our downtown Edmonton acupuncture clinic on their lunch break, we love it when people give themselves time to rest and relax after their treatment instead! After all, your body has just gone through a healing experience. You need to give it time to absorb the benefits. Take it easy for the rest of the day if you can—avoid strenuous activities and opt for calm, relaxing environments. If you want, you can even book a massage at our clinic right after (which can help decrease soreness!).
  • Eat Light and Healthy: Post-acupuncture is an excellent time to nourish your body with light, nutritious meals. Focus on whole foods that are easy to digest and packed with vitamins and minerals. This not only supports your body’s healing but also enhances the treatment’s effects.
  • Take Electrolytes: Taking electrolytes after your acupuncture session can aid in healing and reduce any potential muscle cramping and discomfort!
  • Pay Attention to Your Body: Listen to what your body is telling you. If you feel tired, rest. If you’re hungry, eat. Acupuncture can heighten your body’s awareness, making it essential to honor its signals. This mindfulness will help you maintain the balance achieved during your session.

The Don’ts After Acupuncture

  • Avoid Caffeine and Alcohol: Both caffeine and alcohol can interfere with your body’s healing processes. They can dehydrate you and stress your system, counteracting the calming and balancing effects of acupuncture. If possible, try to avoid these substances for at least 24 hours post-treatment.
  • Avoid NSAIDS for 24 Hours: It might surprise you, but medication like Advil and Aleve may interfere with your body’s natural healing process, so we recommend you avoid taking anything like that for 24 hours.
  • Keep the Exercise Light: Here’s your permission to skip the gym! Instead, we recommend keeping any exercise you do light (think a gentle walk or yoga) which can help alleviate any soreness you might feel after your session by promoting blood flow. We also recommend sticking to 50% of your usual workout the day after too!
  • Don’t Take a Shower or Bath Immediately: While we do suggest you let your body adjust naturally before exposing it to significant temperature changes, if you are feeling a bit sore after your session, consider using a moist heat like a hot water bottle, sauna, or bath.

While those are the biggest post-acupuncture do’s and don’ts, here are some other things to consider as well!

Common Reactions After an Acupuncture Session

One thing we always like to tell our clients is that it’s normal to experience a range of reactions after acupuncture. You might feel energized, as if you’ve had a refreshing nap, or you could feel slightly sore where the needles were inserted. It might surprise you, but some people even experience an emotional release, feeling more open and at ease. These responses are all part of your body’s natural healing process, indicating that the treatment is working.

Post-Acupuncture Dos and Don’ts: How Consistency Plays a Role in Long-Term Benefits

On top of considering what to do after your treatment, we also want to stress that consistency is key in acupuncture. Just like any other wellness routine, regular treatments can provide cumulative benefits. Scheduling sessions consistently can help manage chronic issues, balance your hormones, and maintain overall well-being. Think of acupuncture as an ongoing investment in your health rather than a one-time fix. Finally, don’t forget to use this blog as a guide for post-acupuncture dos and don’ts!
